Manchester, 1792, and a decline in the City’s textile trade led to widespread rioting as people fell into hunger and poverty. Not to be beaten by the harsh economic climate, two street urchins got together and formed a wandering musical troupe who played around the gin bars and tent cities of the town. With their baggy trousers and shirts – oversized as they could afford nothing else – they soared to popularity until the early 1800s, when in the midst of working on their second sheet music compilation, all members of the troupe fell to the Demon Insanity – thus the term Madchester was born. This design celebrates the original cover art of their 1789 debut recording.
